An Interview with Jake Bowers
Written by Rukshana Smith
Rukshana_tiny.jpgJournalist Jake Bowers is proud of his Romani heritage. And he believes that the British Government, instead of reviling and marginalising the Romani people in the UK, should celebrate the massive contribution made by this long established minority. In 2003 he set up the Gypsy Media Company, with the aim of raising the profile of a much maligned community. Jake answers a few questions below.

Written by Sirus Malakooty & Philip McGough
ChildrenGetViolins_l.jpgChildrenGetViolins_R.jpg

On 13 January, a consignment of musical instruments, bought with your contributions, arrived safely in Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan.

They are a gift from Artists Without Frontiers to the children of the Malika Sabirova School of Music.

A report by the Dushanbe based journalist Zarineh Khoshvaght brought this school to our attention. Then, Mehdi Jami, shooting his own documentary in Tajikistan visited the school and brought back to London a short film reportage. Thus we learned about this specialist music school where children of all ages receive a musical education.

Simin Behbahani, the greatest Persian lyricist of the modern age
Written by Dr. Shadab Vajdi
Shadab_Vajdi.jpgSimin Behbahani's poems mark some of the highest pinnacles of contemporary Iranian poetry. Her much-loved character is a shining example of courage and of love for humanity. The light emanating from all of her works is a reflection of her personality. Here, I wish to refer only to one of the characteristics of Simin Behbahani's poetry, viz. the manifestation of love for humanity in her works. Since the first days that Simin started to compose chains of couplets in addition to her lyrical work, this light, and this warmth, were felt in her poems.

Poetry and Dream Imagery
Written by Vivien Steels
Vivien Steels"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined." Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862)

You never dream? Everyone dreams; they just remember them in varying degrees.  During 1982/1983 I kept a detailed Dream Diary, because my dreams had become even more vivid, as though trying to impart in their strange, arcane images what I needed to confront, change & explore.

The Via Francigena: Trekking the Pathway to Paradise
Written by Brandon Wilson
brandon wilsonIn the entire world, reportedly, there were three roads to Paradise in early Christendom. The first is the Camino de Santiago that meanders 500 miles across northern Spain. This has been trekked by millions of faithful for centuries on their way to pay homage to the remains of the apostle St. James in Santiago de Compostela. Of course, the path from Rome, center of the Holy See, to Jerusalem must appear in this sacred trinity. But in second position and gaining in popularity is the Via Francigena (The Frankish Route).

The silk route of Poetry in Octavio Paz
Written by Bashir Sakhawarz - London

TinyPaz.jpgIt is a full moon and I am walking in Lodi Garden in the footsteps of Octavio Paz.  The night has mixed fragrances of Raat Ke Raani (the queen of the night) and the two stars shining from above in the clear sky of Delhi, one is Octavio Paz and the other is Pablo Neruda.

Roger Humes and Snejina Mecheva about the Importance of Being Cosmopolitan
Written by Zdravka Vladova-Momcheva
ZM.jpg  I'm sending you my article "The Importance of Being Cosmopolitan", which is an experimental interview. My idea was to ask the very same questions two people, never known each other, living thousands miles away, having totally different lifestyles. In this interview I wanted them to share their personal points of view about how do they understand communication and art creation in today's global reality. I also wanted to check whether intellectuals are ready to understand, accept and live together in a global situation. Hopefully the answer is positive.

Your help needed -- Sudan Emergency
Written by Bill Schulz, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA

Darfur.jpgAs the news media keeps the world's attention focused on the disastrous tsunami in southern Asia, other crises do not take a holiday. I am writing to tell you that we are at a critical juncture in the Sudan, where a tidal wave of brutality, neglect, and violence has tormented this land for more than two decades.

A peace treaty signed earlier this month purports to end a 21-year civil war in the south of the country that has claimed more than two million people and left six million more without homes or shelter.  But in the northwestern Darfur region, Janjawid militias continue to rampage, burning villages, raping women, and attacking innocent civilians.
