The house was old. Its windows facing a tangle of elder trees, nettles and hawthorn bushes, looked threatening. A pungent cloud of gadflies often spewed from the cracks between the bricks, then the golden belies of the insects, full of sun and poison, hid in the shadows to conceive new little gadflies in the dark, far from the hot well trodden earth, unlike the lizards that conceived their young near the paths of sheep and cows.
