Darfur.jpgAs the news media keeps the world's attention focused on the disastrous tsunami in southern Asia, other crises do not take a holiday. I am writing to tell you that we are at a critical juncture in the Sudan, where a tidal wave of brutality, neglect, and violence has tormented this land for more than two decades.

A peace treaty signed earlier this month purports to end a 21-year civil war in the south of the country that has claimed more than two million people and left six million more without homes or shelter.  But in the northwestern Darfur region, Janjawid militias continue to rampage, burning villages, raping women, and attacking innocent civilians.

For countless victims of the bloodshed, what is in shortest supply is justice.

As an Amnesty supporter, you have been instrumental in our efforts to activate the global community on behalf of the innocent people whose lives have been shattered in the Sudan.  Please help us again, by donating today in support of our efforts to win peace and justice.

An Amnesty International report released last week found that despite decades of horrific human rights abuses by government and government-sponsored forces, not a single perpetrator has been brought to justice.  And the new peace treaty is silent on the subject.

In Darfur, abuses continue unabated. Just this past weekend, a fresh round of violence in Darfur left eight villages destroyed and an unknown number killed.

The United Nations Security Council must act, by referring the worst cases to the International Criminal Court.  Pressure must continue on the Sudanese government, to stop the Janjawid in Darfur, to enforce the treaty in the south, and to institute legal reforms so that all war criminals are brought to justice.

As one woman told an Amnesty researcher, "We cannot have peace of mind if we do not know what happened to our husbands and brothers."

As you know, Amnesty has been working tirelessly to document abuses, activate the world community, and engage other governments in an effort to restore peace and justice to Sudan.  With your help, we can see this through, and bring another heart-breaking chapter in the struggle for universal human rights to a just conclusion.

Please donate today to support our work in Sudan and in other human rights crisis spots.

P.S. Our hearts go out to the countless victims of the December tsunami.  But the victims of the Sudan need your help as well!
